Women's Health with Regards to Honor Killings

After reviewing chapter 1, New Dimensions in Women's Health Fifth Edition, the issue of honor killings became a topic of concern. Conditioning women in certain parts of the world to become accustomed to being violated is an act of violence.  Consequently, for the sake of honoring a certain community, the same women are then put to death to preserve the dignity of the community.   Women should not be born to such atrocities regardless of religion, race, or level of income.
Inviting J.A. to join the discussion regarding the subject of honor killings with respect to women, brought forth strong emotions.  Alarmed by  the very idea,  J.A. believed the various governments should declare war upon countries that hurt and harm women to such degrees.  It is evident both J.A. and I feel a strong sense of despair for women who are destroyed in the name of honor.
Organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) , The Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination of All Forms Against Women (CEDAW), and The United Nations have been working to solve such issues as honor killings; however, more women are still at risk.  Stronger laws governing women's rights must prevail before change can be effective.  I am of an opinion, such acts should not and must not continue.

  1. Hi Beatrice,

Nice to meet you my name Is Kitara. Honor killings have always been an interest of mine as well; I have always wondered is it anywhere in the Quran.I say this because the religion that is associated with HK is Islam; Muslim men are know for killing their women in the name of honor, but it is not I have done research and no where is it found in the Quran that justifies it. They try and twist the word of the Quran and the Old Testament in the bible to justify it. What can we do to help these women overseas I am not sure I would like to know. It is said the brutal the killing higher the higher restoration of honor to the family and the community, but what about the men that bring shame and honor are they killed? No it is because women are still low on the totem pole and something needs to be done.

I suggest to anyone who reads this comment watch this movie: The Stoning of Soraya M.

It is a very moving film it will make you angry.

    Until next time.....Peace,Love, and Happiness

    God Bless and Namaste!!!

  2. This article brings to light a topic that has affected Women, particularly in Asia and Africa. sometime this atrocity is carried out only to settle a dispute. Human Rights defines honor killing as " A woman can be targeted by (individuals within) her family for a variety of reasons, including: refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault seeking a divorce — even from an abusive husband — or (allegedly) committing adultery. The mere perception that a woman has behaved in a way that "dishonors" her family is sufficient to trigger an attack on her life". Queen Noor of Jordan is probably the only high profile public figure to actually come out against this barbaric practice. More mass awareness should be created on this issue. I would like everyone to visit the following website and read a related story
